|Richard Kooyman was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and received his BFA from Grand Valley State University with a Merit Scholarship. He earned his MFA from Ohio State University where he studied on a Full Fellowship. He has won numerous awards including the Sally Avery Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, The Michigan Governors Award, National Endowment for the Arts Grant, and the Michigan Council for the Arts Grant. His work has been exhibited at the Art of the 20th Century Armory Exhibition in New York, the Ann Nathan Gallery, Manistee Art Institute, and the Charles Wutsum Museum. Frequent painting trips to Canada and New Mexico have developed a love for the painted surface represented in the paintings of Tom Thompson, Victor Higgins, and Fairfield Porter. Richards Kooymans style of natural realism focuses on the brush work and heightened color to express the emotion of place and time.
