"These landscapes are about particular places that I have loved to be. They are done outdoors, surrounded by the changing light, the blowing wind, the bugs, and the smell of the sea or the field. They represent, for me, the total absorption into the world that I strive for with my paintings. "Tom's Cabin", for example, which is a tiny wood shack on a tiny island in the middle of the Penobscot Bay in Maine, is a perfect example of being completely within the natural world. "Practice Shed", which is the barn where musicians from Tanglewood prepare for their evening concerts, and which was next door to where I was living at the time, seemed to echo my own setting up of my easel in the outdoors. The harmony within the painting conjures for me the warm embrace of the countryside." Valerie Mendelson
